The first time I remember considering my regular habits of spiritual growth was in seventh grade. My dad brought home a devotional titled 40 Days with God by singer Rebecca St. James. I devoured it. Through my teen years, my spiritual habits consisted of sitting cross-legged on my bed, reading a devotion and a few Bible verses then writing in my prayer journal before falling asleep. It was a rhythm that I missed at college, and even in the first years of marriage. I remember reading Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster in my early twenties, thinking, “Wow, this is a lot to handle.” It was great content, but it felt out of reach to live into. Over the years, I’ve read a number of books on spiritual disciplines, and often, they are so intense that I felt I would have to move to a cloistered abby to begin to implement them. Was there a rhythm of walking with God and being changed by him that could actually work in my life? The answer is, of course, yes. What would life WITH God look like?
Over the next six weeks, we are going to talk about spiritual habits that help us grow in the grace and love of God. I wrestled with what to call this series, as it is a compilation of many things I’ve learned and am still learning from books, sermons, and friends who are far beyond me in this journey. This is a series for learners, in the sense that we are all learners and none of have arrived on this journey. At the same time, it is difficult walk with God in a world that eagerly tries to distract us from this. The great news is that we have centuries, millennia even!, of people who have walked this path before us, and we get to learn from them. There are a number of names for what we are going to learn about together–spiritual formation, means of grace, discipleship, faith practices, habits, disciplines–but I’m just going to call it “Walking With God”.
